Bhikaji Cama Place Metro Station Flood Mitigation Case File

Bhikaji Cama Place Metro Station is an important underground station on Delhi Metro’s Pink Line. It serves the major Bhikaji Cama Place commercial and office district and handles significant daily passenger movement. Entry Gates 3 and 4 of the station were identified as vulnerable to floodwater entering from the adjoining main road during periods of heavy rainfall. Two entrances of nearly 7 meters each protecting flood height of 60 cms.

During waterlogging on the main road, passing buses and cars create strong waves in the accumulated floodwater. These waves travel towards the metro entrances, rise over the initial steps and can enter the escalator area and move further towards the station platforms. This in turn damages the expensive escalators and causes havoc at platforms for safety and movement.

To control the entry of these sudden waves of floodwater, Delhi Metro selected the H-frame aluminium flood barriers manufactured and installed by Frontier Flood Barriers India LLP.

The barriers were installed at Entry Gates 3 and 4. The system consists of fixed side frames and removable aluminium planks that can be deployed before heavy rainfall or whenever waterlogging is anticipated.

Once installed and compressed, the barrier forms a protective wall across the entrance while allowing the opening to remain completely accessible during normal operating conditions.
