Flood Protection at Airtel Facility, Ludhiana

Flood Protection at Airtel Facility, Ludhiana
Executed by Frontier Flood Barriers India LLP.
Project Overview
As part of its flood resilience and infrastructure protection measures, Airtel selected Frontier Flood Barriers for its Ludhiana facility, where three separate access points required protection against potential floodwater ingress.
The project involved the design and installation of three removable aluminium flood gates, each engineered according to the width of the opening and anticipated hydrostatic loading.
Three Flood Gates – Engineered for Different Openings
The complete installation consisted of:
- Flood Gate 1: 4,440 mm wide × 1,000 mm high
- Flood Gate 2: 4,770 mm wide × 1,000 mm high
- Flood Gate 3: 1,265 mm wide × 1,000 mm high
Due to their wider spans, Gate 1 and Gate 2 incorporate removable intermediate columns. These intermediate supports divide the overall span and provide additional structural support to the aluminium flood barrier planks under water pressure.
Once the flood risk has passed, the barrier planks and intermediate columns can be removed, allowing the access points to return to their normal unobstructed condition.
For the significantly smaller third opening, Frontier used its M40 aluminium flood barrier section, providing a more appropriately engineered and compact flood protection solution.

Modular Flood Gate Design
Rather than applying the same flood barrier configuration to every opening, the Ludhiana project demonstrates Frontier’s ability to engineer the flood protection system according to the individual width and requirement of each location.
The modular system allows the flood gates to remain removed during normal operations and to be rapidly installed when heavy rainfall or flooding is anticipated.
This makes removable aluminium flood gates particularly suitable for data centers, telecom facilities, industrial buildings and other critical infrastructure, where both uninterrupted access and emergency flood protection are important.
Made in India Flood Protection System
The installed Frontier Flood Barriers are manufactured in India using BIS-certified aluminium.
Frontier’s modular aluminium flood barrier system has also been independently verified by IIT for hydrostatic pressure performance and water leakage, providing an additional level of technical validation for critical applications.
Local manufacturing also provides an important advantage for infrastructure operators by ensuring easier availability of technical support, replacement components and future spares.
Project Objective
The three flood gate installations at Airtel Ludhiana have been designed to:
- Prevent floodwater ingress through vulnerable access points.
- Protect critical telecom and electrical infrastructure.
- Provide removable flood protection without permanently obstructing access.
- Allow rapid installation of flood barriers during a flood warning.
- Provide structural support across wider openings through removable intermediate columns.
- Improve the overall flood resilience and operational preparedness of the facility.
The project highlights how modular flood barriers and removable flood gates can be engineered differently for individual openings within the same facility using heavier M86 flood barrier sections for large spans and the more compact M40 system for smaller openings.
For critical infrastructure, an effective flood protection barrier system is ultimately about maintaining operations while reducing the risk of water reaching areas where even relatively small levels of flooding can result in significant damage and downtime.
