Flood Protection at Airtel Data Centre, Jalandhar

Flood Protection at Airtel Data Centre, Jalandhar
Executed by Frontier Flood Barriers India LLP.
Project Overview
Data centres are highly sensitive facilities where even limited water ingress can result in serious disruption, equipment damage and operational downtime.
To strengthen flood protection at its Jalandhar Data Centre, Airtel installed a Frontier Flood Barrier system at a critical access point vulnerable to floodwater entry. This location was selected as the main gate from where the flood water could enter the building.
Frontier Flood Barrier Installation
Frontier Flood Barriers installed a modular aluminium H-Frame flood protection barrier measuring:
Length: 5.5 metres
Height: 1.0 meter
The system functions as a rapidly deployable flood gate and flood barrier, while allowing the access area to remain completely open during normal operations.
When there is a flood warning or risk of water ingress, the aluminium barrier planks can be quickly installed to create a strong temporary flood protection wall across the opening.
Some civil work was required at the customer's end which involved adding the floor plate (provided along with the flood gate) for heavy traffic movement coming from the main gate.

The removable intermediate column was fixed along with cementing of the floor at the entrance.

Why Flood Protection is Critical for Data Centers
For a data centre, flood protection barriers are not merely about protecting the building. Water ingress can affect:
- Electrical and power infrastructure
- Servers and critical equipment
- Backup systems and utilities
- Access to operational areas
- Business continuity and uptime
A properly designed flood gate system or removable flood barrier therefore becomes an important part of a facility’s overall flood mitigation and disaster preparedness strategy.
Frontier Flood Protection System
The installed system uses Made in India modular aluminium H-Frame Flood barriers manufactured using BIS certified aluminium. The system also uses compress levers on the ends for easy locking of the system.
Frontier Flood Barrier systems have also been independently verified by IIT for hydrostatic pressure performance and water leakage, providing confidence in their suitability for critical infrastructure applications.
Unlike permanent walls or fixed flood gates, the modular system provides effective flood protection while keeping the entrance unobstructed during normal operations.
Project Objective
The 5.5 metre wide × 1 metre high flood barrier installation at the Airtel Data Centre has been designed to:
- Prevent floodwater from entering the protected area.
- Protect critical infrastructure and equipment.
- Reduce the risk of operational disruption caused by flooding.
- Provide a rapidly deployable flood gate solution during emergency conditions.
- Keep the access completely unobstructed during normal operations.
- Strengthen the facility’s overall flood protection and flood mitigation measures.
The installation demonstrates how flood barriers, flood gates and modular flood protection barriers can significantly improve the resilience of critical infrastructure such as data centres, where preventing water ingress can be far more effective than managing the consequences of flooding after it occurs.
